It would be hard to tell which movie I have spent more time memorizing lines from: Princess Bride or Holy Grail Revenge most foul!

Wow. I can't decide about this one. Too different, and I love them both.

I haven't seen either movie, and I wish to be a real pain in the butt, so. . .

Monty Python. Felicitous

I voted American Beauty in protest. This should not be such a staggering defeat. After all, The Holy Grail is only a comedy, albeit a very good one/

I haven't seen the Holy Grail MP. Instead, the Meaning of Liff Life was aired in my country. And although it seemed interesting, it was a looong looong way from making my list of favourite movies... Was the Grail really much better?

The Holy Grail is just stuffed with hillarious scenes. You just have to see it to explain it.

"Only" a comedy? Good comedies that outlast current fads and stay relevant to more than one generation are, IMHO, far more difficult to write than good drama.

Yes, but "The Holy Grail" is only one movie. Anyone can make one funny movie, and the movie had nothing more going for it other than being funny. This does not a good movie make, at least IMO.

Oh, I wasn't defending Holy Grail as such -- I just couldn't let an entire genre of film be casually disparaged. Comedy can be valuable social commentary as well as entertainment, and can be as difficult to make as drama is.

I'm a "Life of Brian"-ite myself.

There's not a whole lot of point - only that you seem to be dismissing comedy as an inferior genre, and yet nominated one. I find it hard to believe you find New Groove so mind-blowingly awesome that it rose above its genre enough to make your top twenty movies.

Antrax claims that "anyone can make one funny movie"!?!?!?!

Has he tried?

As an actor and director...although not very successful...I believe comedy is much harder to produce than drama (or tragedy, or whatever you choose to call it). Look at the Academy Award winners and it is easy to see that Drama is simple.

ANTRAX:
"(Holy Grail) had nothing more going for it other than being funny" !!!

When have any of us been that funny?

"American Beauty" is wonderful! Kevin Spacey is brilliant! However, Monty Python pushed comedy to new levels that still have not been surpassed.

It is simple to 'gross out' or 'pun' your way into comedic mediocrity, but PYTHON found humor in everyday irritability and common misconceptions.

As far as I am concerned, the comedy of GRAIL, far surpassed the rather routine drama of BEAUTY.

I realize that much is left to personal preferance, but I do not buy into the puerile supposition that drama is somehow more deserving of praise than comedy!

Look at my sig. Click the big image thing. It will take you to a site I visit regularly.

Do I visit the site because of the drama of finding out if Montana Jones will beat the Nazis?
Or do I visit the site because of the humor?

The latter. Duh. So obviously drama is better, because I'm dumb, and everything I believe is wrong.

Oooh. Bad llama, bad. Felicitous

To be honest... I'm undecided. I've not actually seen American Beauty, which means I should vote for the Holy Grail... BUT... it's not the best thing the Monty Python team ever did. Sure, I can recite the entire script by heart, but it's not great.
