Well, what I meant to get across was that I like SW to begin with, but since it was a revolutionary movie, it's just that much better. Does that make sense?
This is the first movie thread to reach page 2. w00t! and stuff. |

| Okay SW is a series Are you calling the series revolutionary or something in this movie in particular? It's the move thats against BR here not the series. Though I'll give you the critics (if you go by their opinion) consider this the best of the 3 orginal movies. |

I'm kind of referring to both. SW the SERIES was revolutionary, but each part of it was as well. New stuff was added into each one, not to mention the fact that it was the first three-part movie play, IIRC. (That's what Lucas called it. Kind of like LotR. Three acts of one play.)
And I don't understand that either, Elayne. All of a sudden, the best SW movie can't beat BR? Something's amiss. |

I guess my problem is (though not with this movie) is people will vote for a particular movie cause they like the SERIES as a whole. I personally am not sure that series like SW or LotR should really be broken up for voting as people have a hard time seperating their thoughts of the overall from those of the individual movie. Indiana Jones for example is one I do think should be seperated as the plot of each is pretty independent. Though in some cases like the Matrix, only the first is good and IMO, the other 2 probably shouldn't have been made so not sure what I'd want to see there.
okay random rambling done now |

I completely agree with you Elayne. That's why when this all started out, I put SW and LotR as a whole, but I was told to break it up. |

My problem is people voting for or against movies they've never seen.
I think I've voted in < half the matches thus far. _________________

I haven't voted in Princess Bride vs. Die Hard I because I've only seen about 80% of Die Hard.
I can't stand it when people vote for/against movies in a series just because they saw the first one, liked/hated it, and from that feel like they can judge the subsequent ones. Or worse, haven't seen either movie but decide that since the first was so good/horrible, that they have to vote for/against it, no matter what the competition is. |

What is wrong with you people? SW was revolutionary! Without it, we would probably still be watching movies like Casablanca (not much wrong with that, but...). Come on, someone vote for Empire and make it win.

I did not vote on this one. However, if I had voted on which was more revolutionary, it would be Blade Runner. It is (to this day) heavily studied and imitated by cinematographers, especially for such things as camera angles and lighting use. Not being a camera man or a director myself, it is easy for me to overlook such things, but it is even more difficult to describe what the difference in influence would be had there been a New Hope and a Return of the Jedi, but not an Empire Strikes back.
Some of you seem to be wondering why everyone seems to love Blade Runner, and you don't see anything in it. The answer is simply that not everyone loves Blade Runner, but those that do are rather devote about it. Popularly, Blade Runner was not much of a success at all. Grossing $31,320,441, with $6,150,002 the opening weekend. It achieved little initial critical success either, according to this (which could easily be inaccurate, but I have no reason to doubt it). Some blame this on the producer's removal of many of those clues which Dethy missed in the release version. (They were reinstated in the director's cut. A couple SPOILERS HERE.) Personally, I don't really think it would have made much difference. For comparison, Empire Strikes Back grossed $538,375,067.
Star Wars, on the other hand, was a very highly popularizing series. It made the general public go and see science fiction movies and not be embarrassed by it. That could be considered "revolutionary" enough (especially if we discuss the series and not the individual movies) without even discussing whatever particular innovations Empire contained. (Apart from special effects perhaps, I'm drawing a blank. Puppeteering advances maybe?)
It is one of those things like comparing Fletcher Henderson and Benny Goodman for their influence on Jazz music, or comparing Edger Allan Poe with Sir Arther Conan Doyle for their influence on mystery stories. Both are important for different reasons, one being definately more popularly remembered than the other. (This isn't quite a good analogy, as Blade Runner was definately not as much of a forerunner as Fletcher or Poe. But it could easily turn into the same style argument.)
Anyway, as to the entertainment value of the movies, I have no strong feelings, and I have surpassed my babbling limit. |
