Could someone close down the account for aquatic-store.com or at least attempt to talk to them. They've linked a list of porn sites, and as of yet didn't make a single post, seems spamming to me.

Good eye, MGM. I saw this new arrival too. There have been other registrations as of late of persons who never post but have a web address in their profile. I assume they get some kind of credit for clicks on the site.
This new "member" is even more blatant.

And seriously, if you don't want bots registering on the GL, we could install a mod that hampers them pretty seriously (the "security code" thing - the computer generates an image of random letters, distorted to make it harder for image-recognition software to read, and asks you to type it in a box to register. Humans have better image recognition than computers so they have no trouble, but most automated signup thingies can't get past that). So if there's enough demand, let me know, and we'll arrange something out.

Hrrrm. Well, and then email verification etc etc etc. I'd prefer to keep registering here as easy as possible, while weighting other factors.

IMO bots take up minimal space in a table that can later be easily pruned. Unless they start posting. So far, that seems a minimal annoyance and in all liklihood from a live operator (which any safeguard short of IP blocking would not prevent).

The only concern I have is the benefit of registration without posting for the 'bots'. My only guess as to exploits is for spam. Not a big concern for me, I have spam software and the remainder is easily filtered. But this might bug other members, as I'm sure it does because many don't list their email right now.

As a stop gap, is there a mod that only allows viewing of profiles to dead aliens?

The problem comes when you get hit (like scum did) with hundreds of registrations. The 2.0.11 visual confirmation fixed that problem on scum, but if the visual confirmation didn't get installed here, then there are a couple worms that we are vulnerable to.

Yep, in pre 2.0.11 there was a security hole. That's why they retro-fitted the visual confirmation from 2.2. into 2.0.11.

I have no problem patching us to 2.1.5 - I did it for another forum, it takes about 6-8 hours of work if you do it manually, and we probably won't have to.
