And finally the last animated movie. They've had mixed results so far with lion king and aladdin losing, while monster's inc and Toy Story won. So there is some hope for Nemo.

| It's a cool movie even though at any given moment you have really no clue what is going on. I was told I needed to see the Holy Grail first or at least be familiar with the concept of the killer bunny. I saw the Holy Grail but I still didn't understand the role of the donnie darko bunny. |

| Finding Nemo was done very well, but Donnie Darko is a classic - great acting all around from some great talents, great soundtrack and audio, great visuals, and very mysterious. The fact that it's a true story (you didn't know that?) makes it even better. Pity it will probably lose because it wasn't mass marketed to the kiddies like Nemo. I first heard about it here at the GL, and I'm glad I downloaded it, and later bought the DVD. |

I didn't know it was true but it doesn't surprise me. It's the kind of story that happens all the time but you just don't hear about it. Kind of like the story, Ghostbusters.
I heard about the movie here too, extro! It was from some rebellious kid from Kalamazoo named justin d or justindl or something like that. He doesn't post anymore I guess. _________________ Samadhi (about GL convention) “I would have had clowns and shit”

Nemo is great, but Donnie Darko is truly an amazing movie. Defying categorization, it is funny, scary, sci-fi, dramatic, suspenseful, and just downright interesting. Not a single scene is out of place and it pulls together beautifully at the end. Beyond plain entertainment (and Nemo is entertaining, don't get me wrong), Donnie is a new type of movie.
See it if you haven't seen it. Samhadi, I think you'd love it. |

| I loved Finding Nemo!! Donnie Darko strikes me as more unique and one-of-a-kind, though. I think it was more special. I wanted to see it more than once, while the first time was really enough for Finding Nemo. Donnie Darko. |

| BTW, was it too obvious - one of the movies playing in the theater Donnie goes to is Last Temptation of Christ - and the parallels between the story of Donnie and the story of Jesus, as told by Scorcese? In both stories, the character takes one path, gets to see the consequences, then goes back to take the other path. It was odd when I realized this, because I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, many times, before realizing it (so maybe it wasn't obvious?). After realizing it, I'm still not sure what the point is (if any), but it can't be coincidence. |

lol, I know I've already enjoyed the movie from the reviews I read so far...and I've been no closer to watching it yet.
Don't know why that reminded me of this review from Mr. Cranky on the movie Saving Christmas, but read this and I'm sure you'll get a laugh Usually Mr. Cranky insults all movies, but once a year he writes a review in reverse and praises it with great sarcasm.

| I've seen both, and I voted for Nemo. I found Nemo to be an amusing piece of easy viewing, with a few clever jokes and some good lines. Donnie Darko is clever, but unless you go through their website afterwards you're just going to be left without a frigging clue what the hell just happened. I don't necessarily like being led through a film like a baby, or need everything concluded conclusively but as just a film on its own Donnie Darko was way too confusing for me, although I can understand why others would appreciate it more. |

The web site (donniedarko.com), in my opinion, adds nothing to the film (though I haven't gone into the site much), nor does anything need to be added.
Nemo was a good children's movie, but totally lacking in depth. It doesn't stay with you - it doesn't have an effect on you - it doesn't make you think.
If movies that make you think are a problem - not as in force you to think, like "Oh god, now I'm gonna have to think to figure this out ... here I go ... grunt ..." - but just naturally stimulate thought, painlessly - if they're a problem, don't see Donnie Darko. But "making you think" is not in the least what it's all about. |

And does Finding Nemo stand out in its category? I.e., 3D computer animated kids films (I don't mean "kids films" in a derogatory sense - I love them - Monsters Inc. especially - The Incredibles too). There was: Toy Story, Toy Story 2, A Bug's Life, Antz, Shrek, Shrek 2, Ice Age, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Chicken Run. Toy Story was groundbreaking as the first, but now they're churning these things out one after another. Monsters Inc. has a lot more going for it - better animation, characters with more depth (less like cartoon characters), more engaging plot. The Incredibles, likewise, though I've only seen it once. Finding Nemo? Most enjoyable fish cartoon I ever saw. Wait ... maybe the Sponge Bob Square Pants Movie?
One might ask the same question of Donnie Darko: Does it stand out in its category? But it defies categorization. It fits under many categories, and stands out in all of them. |

I never saw Chicken Run because it seemed completely uninteresting, but my memory of the incessant TV advertisements and Burger King promos seems to be telling me it was CLAYMATION. :-p _________________ My logic puzzle blog |

| Which is a form of analog 3D computer animation. Computer modelling is not unlike clay modelling, and the computation of the images (aka rendering) is done via an analog ray-casting mechanism using real light and film. The combined equipment used to perform this analog computation can rightly be considered a special purpose computer. I never said digital. :-p |

Whoever voted for Nemo, has not seen Donnie Darko. I don't want to dredge up an old argument, but that is the best movie that I have ever seen.
extro, I...am speechless. It was incredible and weird and incredibly weird and it was just fascinating! When it finished, I realized I had been holding my breath the whole time in anticipation of what was going to happen next. Great movie. I LOVED it! |

I do not know what category into which Donnie Darko fits, but I'm pretty sure it's the same one as Twelve Monkeys and Memento. I think it is on par with Memento, but Twelve Monkeys whips 'em both but good. |

I just saw Memento recently. Interesting, but it doesn't have any sci-fi/fantasy element to it, or mystery, really. It's a story which could be real, actually (barring some possible minor holes in the plot) - no time travel or otherwise out-of-the-ordinary plot elements. The backwards bit works well to put you into the position of the main character who can't remember the past - the audience also doesn't know what chronologically preceded where they are now in the story, beyond a few minutes (they do, however, know the future).
Twelve Monkees? I enjoyed it, but it never struck me as a great movie. Not to take away from it, but it didn't have the originality of style that Darko did. And Brad Pitt? Despite the charismatic appeal he has in parts of many roles (Fight Club), he really ain't the greatest actor, and his portrayal of the nut case in 12 Monkees was average.
Neither 12 Monkees nor Memento were funny. Donnie Darko was. And despite the fantasy elements of Darko, I found the characters to be much more believable. |

At last! Someone else can see the pseudo acting cloak that Pitt has thrown around the fans.
You can't do much worse than Steve Buscemi for a nutcase nowadays.
I personaly believe the downside of Twelve Monkey's was down to Terry Gilliam directing. |

Some of the props in 12 Monkees looked like they were taken right off the set of Brazil. Why is a future culture that has mastered time travel using 1940s style roundish CRT monitors? |
