18.5/63 for me, not counting the Dictionary and only counting the Bible for a half, since I know I definately haven't read all of it.

I feel a little better now, that's more than I thought I had read.

I've read over half of the 64 books and over two-thirds of the books that made the second round.

I project that I will have read at least seven-eighths of the winning book. (Maybe I skipped some appendices or something.)

I've read (at least pasts of) 21 (7, 5, 4, 5) of the second round books. I think the only matchup where I haven't read either book is All Quiet vs. Catch-22.

Round 1 wrapup:

Most popular match, Most votes for a loser: The Catcher in the Rye vs. Sideways Stories from Wayside School (18-15)
Least popular match, least votes by a winner: One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich vs. A Civil Campaign (2-3)
Biggest margin of victory (votes), Most votes for a winner: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy vs. The Oxford English Dictionary (26-5)
Biggest margin of victory (percentage), Least votes for a loser: Cat's Cradle vs. Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid (1-11)
Closest match: The Golden Compass/Northern Lights vs. Wizard and Glass (14-15, 4OT)

Upsets (by number of nominations): 7 out of 22 possible.
Charlotte's Web d. The Bible (2 vs. 6)
I, Robot d. Dune, Fahrenheit 451 d. The Da Vinci Code (2 vs. 5)
Life, the Universe, and Everything d. Choke, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland d. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (2 vs. 4)
Watership Down d. Good Omens, Small Gods d. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (3 vs. 4)

I'm not sure what this says, exactly, but...
Most nominees in first round: mith (17)
Most nominees in second round: mith (12)
(Though 3 of my top 6 went out)

Looks like we're going to have Adams vs. Adams and Orwell vs. Orwell next round. We'll see about Tolkien vs. Tolkien next week. The final 8 should have plenty of variety, as the only author who could have two books left at that point is DNA, and Restaurant is looking at a couple of tough matchups.

Well, phooey. I joined this forum just a tad too late to nominate any books. Wink However, I'd just like to say that Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert, and All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarqe are definitely among my top five. Also, Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon was a really fun read, but I have no idea what went on in it.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I'd have lost my way (on the road of life, or something) a long time ago if it weren't for the OED.

I've read all remaining books in Ender's Division. What do you want to know? Extreme Delectation

Seeing how often people vote when they've only read one of the two books, and seeing as there were only five votes in the match, I'm beginning to wonder if I'm the only one to have read both books in the A Civil Campaign vs. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich match-up.

I thought Ender's division was, bottom to top, the strongest bracket with Hitchhiker's as the runner up. Do you suppose this just comes from having read the most books out of there? (I like to think it comes more from being less impressed with some of the books I have read in other divisions, such as I'd vote Huck Finn over Tom Saywer, but I suppose I could just be deluding myself.)

L'lanmal:

I have read both A Civil Campaign and One Day in the Life. One Day in the Life was much better, but I stopped voting after the first round 1 bracket, because getting involved, even minimally, might transform my mere disappointment into frustration. Felicitous fnord.

I understand that sentiment completely. That's why I didn't nominate any movies for the movie tournament.

I think the key here is in the term "prefer".
Not "which book is better?", but "which do you prefer?"

The BBC ran into similar problems with their poll a few years ago, which asked for "best-loved" books. I was startled to find books like "1984" making the top ten. Now I certainly consider 1984 to be a great book, but in no way is it a book I would read for pleasure.
I have read both "A Civil Campaign" and "One Day...", and although I know which one is better literature, it's also very clear to me which one I would read again and again - and therefore prefer.

Of the R2 books I have read all but 2 (and will now go out of my way to read them, since they obviously have support from a fair number of people.) But, as with the movie poll, I shall probably not be surprised that the final eight will not be books generally acclaimed for their longevity or contribution to the western literary canon.

I've read 12 of 15 for the next round; if Wizard and Glass wins the tiebreak, that'll be 13 of 16. And I'm in the middle of reading Catch-22.

Getting easier to vote. Though it'll get harder again when I have to decide between some of my favorites. Revenge most foul!

I've read over half of the books, over two-thirds of those that made the second round, over three-quarters of the ones that made the the third round, over four-fifths of the ones to make the forth round,

To guarantee that I've read five-sixths of the ones to make the fifth round, watching the movie would have to count as reading at least 1/3rd of the book. Or I could just do some reading before then.

Puzzle: Of the current 16 books, if I've made no assumptions about what is winning this round, what is the least number I could've read?
