Accoridng to dictionary.com, because they're recorded in the New Testament. Apparently we have different views as to what's required to make something be a sacrament.
As an example (I don't have time to go through the rest of them right now), here's a summary of why Confirmation is a sacrament (again, Catechism):
Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit "on Easter Sunday and then more strikingly at Pentecost." The apostles then went out converting people, and would lay hands on the newly baptized in order to give them the Holy Spirit. Eventually perfumed oil was added to this, as well. It's spreading the Holy Spirit that Jesus gave us. I'd say that comes from Jesus. At any rate, it's in the New Testament. |

Coyote -- this is probably covered in those rosary sites (didn't read them), but after every ten small beads (Hail Marys) is a larger bead set a space apart, for the Our Father. And while doing each set of beads, you should be reflecting on a different incident from the life of Jesus or Mary -- these are called the "Mysteries."
Saying the rosary does tend to send one into a peaceful state -- some feel it brings them closer to God, though it could be considered closer to self-hypnosis. Either way, it's quite soothing.
There's an Islamic equivalent, but I'm not suire if those are called rosaries or prayer beads. Wordcross would know. |

| The Our Father bead isn't necessarily larger. |

It always was in those ones we got in school. But I suppose it's more important that it be a space apart.
One of my grandmothers had a crystal rosary with white Hail Marys and pink Our Fathers. Those were all the same size.
And when I was eight I accidentally melted a plastic rosary on a light bulb. I wonder how many years of purgatory one gets for that. |

| Making a rosary out of plastic seems disrespectful. By melting one you qualify for sainthood. |
