I just want to be a private tutor for some wealthy family who doesn't have time to spend with their children. I think I'm pretty well-versed in the basic subjects to be able to do that, especially since I wouldn't have to follow some stupid curriculum which is only designed to get them to pass whatever inadequate form of standardized testing is required.
What is this you do, Neo? I'm not familiar with such a thing. _________________ Paragon Tally: 18 mafia, 3 SKs (1 twice), 1 cultist, numerous chat scum...and counting. |

I work at a residential outdoor science education facility that specializes in challenge courses and physics/astronomy.
The way my current facility works, during the year school groups come out for 3 or 5 days. We do some ropes course stuff with them, some astronomy stuff (telescopes, etc), and some hands-on labs focused around physics and astronomy.
As an instructor, I'd be with a group of up to 15 students, do their classes, facilitate their challenges, etc. The schools bring adult chaperones who supervise the kids in the dorms and during meals and free time. When that group left, I'd meet my next group. The camp is a more traditional science summer camp in the summer months.
Like I said, it's worth looking into if you don't mine really really low pay and few benefits. I've been doing it for longer than most, but there's definitely a high turnover as people move (back or on) into real classrooms. Or something else entirely. _________________

Zag,
we *do* do those things. he has separate snacks for treats stocked in the classroom, and extra snacks for the cases where a parent brings a treat in with their child that is unsafe. The frustration lies in the fact that this is not something new to the teacher to the parents, they have all been asked to not bring in birthday treats with gluten. They have been given safe alternatives to give instead.
That the parents bring in something with gluten I can understand, it's not on their minds all the time but the teacher has extra snacks specifically for this occasion.
If it were a kid with a peanut allergy who could potentially hav a very severe immediate reaction there would be a great deal of vigilance on the part of the teacher. My son's reactions are not as severe and definitely not immediate, but just as detrimental to his health in the long run. And unfortunately, just a few crumbs do make him sick.
On a related note, the discussion here on wheelchairs has made me more aware of leaving a close by parking spot open if the handicapped spots are taken.. |

| So basically you are doing what I suggested already, but the teacher is too dense to implement it. Somebody's head needs to be beaten against a wall, but I don't think it is yours. |

I'm shocked by the amount of people here who have close family members with such...exhausting?...afflictions. I just don't know that many people like this in my real life. I worked with a school that suspended a kid for two weeks because he packed a peanut butter sandwich for lunch, and there was a kid in his class with a peanut allergy.
My company has a policy during summer camp that peanut products aren't even allowed in staff housing (where no kids ever go, ever). We're not even allowed to eat peanut products within 24 hours of being on camp (for that 1 day off we get in summer). It's totally unenforceable, and completely stupid. I've been on the phone with parents who claim their kids will go into Anaphylactic shock if you shake hands with their child after eating peanuts within the last day.
Parents of peanut allergies are insane. And the American education system completely enables them. _________________

I've seen the same thing, Neo. I understand there are people who do have severe reactions to small amounts of peanut products, but I'm pretty sure there are other allergies which can be just as severe. (And for the love of whatever deity, can we just have some common sense?) What makes peanuts so prevalent in the foreground?
It's convenient this is the annoyance thread since I feel a rant about modern stupidity coming on. _________________ Paragon Tally: 18 mafia, 3 SKs (1 twice), 1 cultist, numerous chat scum...and counting. |

And it's blown way out of proportion. Peanuts won't trigger anaphylaxis unless ingested. The smell/aroma/presence/thought of peanut butter does not trigger a reaction unless touched. Large scale shelling or cooking with peanuts can potentially cause respiratory distress (which can be serious, but I don't recall if anaphylaxis can occur).
So yes, most of the precautions taken by some parents and schools are completely off the rails. It's quickly approaching breast cancer awareness levels of utterly ridiculous in every way, shape, and form.
[edit]I just remembered what the name of this book was. I haven't read it cover to cover, but a (sane) parent had a copy a year or so ago, and I flipped through a good portion of it. Which is where my post is cited from. _________________

True.
Have you ever been in a classroom where 20+ 6 year olds just ate? Food will be everywhere. Crumbs will be everywhere. The risk of ingestion, especially with young children, is high. |

As a parent of a child who ended up at the ER with my little guy when we discovered his peanut allergy at 6 months old, it's rough out there. The reaction levels are all over the place and it is more common place than most of you think.
[rant]The Parent side of me feels like slapping some people who voice opinions this issue without being a parent themselves. Just shut up and wait till you become one. You'll change your tune real quick[/rant]
ok, now that that's off my chest, certainly there are many parents who exaggerate the reaction of their kids to peanuts. Whoever, a suspension is over the top, I agree. When I'm camping with other parents, they completely understand and don't bring peanut products because kids play together and accidents happen all the damn time. Better safe than sorry. And I'm rarely the only parent whose kid has a peanut allergy. I'm just saying I completely understand. _________________ "Love is the absolute expression of the human perfection" -Me!

Ctorj,
I totally understand why some parents exagerat too. Other people's responses show me that I can't trust them to just be careful. This basic mis trust is why schools and organizations take extreme percautions. And if there is peanut butter on the table and the kid with the allergy sets something in that spot before it is wiped... trouble is coming. _________________ I could agree with you, but then we would both be wrong. |

Coffee is an important part of my morning work routine, and the coffee-maker is on the other end of the building, so this morning, as always, I got myself a nice BIG cup and returned to my work area.
I took one good gulp and then had to leave for a few minutes to sign in a delivery. When I got back, there was a spider the size of a half-dollar floating in the cup. He was doing the backstroke with all eight legs.
No, I did not drink the coffee anyway. |

$200 to get it re-titled? That is ridiculous. All that has to be done is verification of a piece of paper and filling out a form or two. There is no reason it should cost that much.
I believe it costs $25 here. The last owner didn't even have it switched, I effectively purchased a car from the person he got it from.
POS cars are easier to sell in Alaska. You could probably drive it here and sell it quickly. Especially if it is a Subaru. |

That's just what I paid when I got it, so I'm guessing. That includes tax, title, and license. I know it is somewhat excessive (things don't become big in Texas for nothing ), but it's not that big a deal when I'm already selling the car so cheaply. _________________ Paragon Tally: 18 mafia, 3 SKs (1 twice), 1 cultist, numerous chat scum...and counting. |

It's not that they don't want to pay to put the car in their name, it's that they don't want to put the car in their name. Be especially wary if they pay in straight cash. _________________

Thursday evening at our monthly district scout leader meeting I got a large supply of fundraiser coupon books for the boys in my troop to sell. They do some door to door, but the best way to do it is to set up in front of the local Kroger grocery stores. They're a sponsor and there are Kroger coupons in it so you can't very well sell them in front of the other stores.
The way to reserve times for your troop is to get online starting, we were told, at 8:00 AM Friday and click the link to sign up. There are a lot of troops and Cub Scout packs in this area, so I was right there at 8:00 sharp. It was about 8:25 when the link went live. That's when I found that five weeks of our eight week selling window are reserved for Girl Scouts to sell cookies. I signed up for four time slots, including a Tuesday evening (4:00-8:00) during Spring break.
At 3:00 this afternoon I got an e-mail addressed to those who had signed up that our times had been cancelled due to a glitch and I was given a new link. I signed up again, but two of my times were taken, so I ended up with two weekday spring break evenings.
At 3:30 another e-mail to say the new link was to the test environment and to hold on. About 4:00 I get another e-mail to say it works now but no new link. Using the one in my original confirmation e-mail, I get to sign-up screen, but the first time listed is in June, two months after the selling window. After an hour and eight more e-mails, i am told it will be Monday morning, they hope. We'll all receive another e-mail.
What a clusterfuck! |

Finally replaced my LG Ally with a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. It's a smartphone that is great at pretty much everything...EXCEPT being a phone. Every time I make a call, the mic stops working halfway through the call and the person on the other end can no longer hear me.
Turns out THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE have had the same issue. No one is taking responsibility. Hell, if you call Samsung, chances are they will claim that no one is having the problem.
So I have a few options:
1. Take the phone back and get a replacement. I've heard people that have gotten four in a row that have the same issue, so I'm not holding my breath that this will fix the issue.
2. Wait it out. There's a good source that says the issue will be fixed with the release of Android 4.0.5. However, God only knows when that will be out. It was supposed to be out in March, then it was pushed back to April, and now apparently it's May.
3. Take the phone back and demand a completely different phone. I'm still within the 14 days of purchase, but they did threaten me with a restocking fee, and there's no way in hell I'm paying that. Also, I really really really like everything about this phone except the fact that I can't use it as a phone. Droid Razr Maxx is good, I hear... |

300 people were able to fill out a set of forms in less than the 12 minutes it took me. I knew I shouldn't have bothered reading the questions.
So I didn't get a silver fern visa to New Zealand. But there are still other ways to move there that require just a little extra faith. |

| No, applying for a work visa isn't a scam. They just open this type of visa up only once a year and it is limited to just 300 people on a first-come-first-served basis. They do call it a scheme but I think that is mostly the kiwi dialect. |
