Here is at least one solution. I don't believe there are any others unless the jewels are colored on both sides such that mirror images are allowed:

1 1 2 3 3 3 4
1 2 2 2 3 4 4
1 1 2 5 3 4 6
7 5 5 5 5 4 6
7 7 7 7 6 6 6

That solution is just plain unique, modulo the king doing something silly like painting the crown jewels.

Hints on how to go about solving this.

1. It helps to start by placing the red piece.

2. Use the fact that each piece can only be placed once.

3. Sometimes it's helpful to look at a square and ask what sort of piece covers it, rather than asking where a piece could go.

I got the same solution as Aalk4308. I'm pretty well sure that's the only solution.

Shouldn't this read "unless the king starts doing...", or do you know of a solution where flipping pieces is disallowed.?

But modulo is such a nice word! Feh, you're right it should be unless. The solution is unqiue unless the king does something silly like paint the crown jewels.

toru173 and I also got the same answer as Aalk. Go us! he says. It does help to start with the red piece and then the cyan piece.
