NFL Wipeout is back!
NFL Wipeout 2 returns for the 2005-2006 NFL Season. I have received permission from Chuck to run this year's edition.
To see the thread for the 2004 NFL Wipeout, go here
Rules: (mostly copied and pasted from Chuck. Thanks Chuck!)
This game is played in 17 weekly rounds, one round for each week of the regular National Football League season. In each round, before any NFL games for that week have started, each player sends the game moderator (me) a selection of one or more teams that are scheduled to play that week. After the final game for that week is over, each player receives a score equal to the sum of scores of the teams he selected. However, each player who selected that week's lowest scoring team gets zero instead. If more than one team ties for low score then selecting any of them earns zero points. Teams that don't play in a week aren't counted as scoring zero. There is no penalty for selecting such a team.
Example, if the scores are:
* Steelers 23
* Raiders 20
* Jets 16
* Colts 7
* Browns 54
* Ravens 3
A player choosing the Steelers, Raiders, and Colts would get the sum of their scores, 50 points. A player choosing the Browns and the Jets would get 70 points. A player choosing the Raiders, Jets, Colts, and Ravens would get no points because the Ravens had the lowest score.
After the last game of each week the players' choices for that week, points earned, and total scores so far will be posted in the game thread.
Players who miss the deadline for sending selections will use their previous week's selections minus any teams with a bye for the week. They might get no points for it but it's better than getting a certain zero by not having a selection at all. A player can also send a default list of teams to be used if deadlines are missed. A default list can be changed as often as the player likes.
Players can begin playing at any time during the season but will get no points for the weeks they missed.
You may post in the thread that you are joining the game, but you are not officially playing until I receive your first set of picks.
The player with the highest total score after the 17th week has been played and scored is the winner.
Strategy:
Obviously, if you select all of the teams you'll get no points. Choosing many teams will probably get you zero but could get you a lot of points if you're lucky or knowledgeable. If you're behind in the end game that might be a good strategy. Choosing few teams will probably get you some points but could get you none if you're unlucky. If you're ahead in the end game you might want to do this to avoid taking a zero. Knowing the teams could help. You might want to avoid teams that have been scoring poorly and teams that are playing against strong defensive teams that week.
Here are the deadlines for each week's selections:
1. Thursday, September 8 at 9:00 PM EDT (or Sunday, September 11 at 1:00 PM EDT)
2. Sunday, September 18 at 1:00 PM EDT
3. Sunday, September 25 at 1:00 PM EDT
4. Sunday, October 2 at 1:00 PM EDT
5. Sunday, October 9 at 1:00 PM EDT
6. Sunday, October 16 at 1:00 PM EDT
7. Sunday, October 23 at 1:00 PM EDT
8. Sunday, October 30 at 1:00 PM EST
9. Sunday, November 6 at 1:00 PM EST
10. Sunday, November 13 at 1:00 PM EST
11. Sunday, November 20 at 1:00 PM EST
12. Thursday, November 24 at 12:30 PM EST
13. Sunday, December 4 at 1:00 PM EST
14. Sunday, December 11 at 1:00 PM EST
15. Saturday, December 17 at 1:30 PM EST
16. Saturday, December 24 at 1:00 PM EST
17. Saturday, December 31 at 4:30 PM EST
Complete schedule for the NFL 2004-2005 season.
Selections can be sent by private message or by email (eykir42@gmail.com). If you use email be sure to include your Grey Labyrinth screen name in your message. You can list the teams by team name or location name except New York in which case you have to say whether it's the Jets or the Giants.
While there is no signup deadline, the sooner you begin play the better. Entering midseason guarantees that you start at the back of the pack.
Last year was fun and exciting, with GH barely defeating Mith for the title.

Note for the first week deadline: Because this is only being posted 5 days before the first game of the season, Week 1 will have a little leeway.
Entries for week 1 will be accepted until Sunday, September 11 at 1PM EDT. However, any entries given after the start of the Thursday night game between Oakland and New England will not count the Thursday night game as part of Week 1. For example, an entry submitted on Saturday the 10th cannot include New England or Oakland in the picks, and the low score that counts for that entry is the lowest score of the non-Thursday games.
Good luck! |

| You cant have teams added after a game starts. I think I would want to change my list (to include all the other teams) if one of them was shut out. |

Matthew: Check Reply 2 for how entries submitted after the Thursday game will work.
Recap: Entries submitted between Thursday after the game starts and Sunday before the first game of the day starts will pretend that Thursday's game never existed. The low score for those entries is the low score of Sunday + Monday's games. |

Why isn't this game being more heavily promoted? I wanna beat at least 20 people, darnit.
...which means we're gonna have to find, like, a hundred or so. |

10 is only 3 less than last time =) I might start playing myself in week 2, but as the moderator, I will only play if I post my picks to the thread Monday night as I post results from the previous week, so as not to give an unfair advantage to myself.
You can submit one for mathgrant if you'd like, although I'm bugging him to submit one now =) |

Eykir, that chart doesn't look right on 800 by 600... Perhaps you'd be better off using the traditional "list" style.
edit: But um, you know, I guess I wouldn't really mind switching resolutions once a week. It does look really nice when viewed properly. |

I'll see what I can do about condensing it a little. I also run with a small text size, so perhaps kicking your text size down a notch might make it all fit.
Or, I could just do list style =) Or I could take out the column with the number of times the team was picked.
Edit: Edited to remove the number of times picked column. Does that help any, JDTAY? |

| Well, they still might be. The Bears, Jets, and Titans are all tied for the low at 7, with the Texans possibly joining them. |

Interception, that should keep the Texans at 7.
If 7 stays low, everyone is wiped out except Iammars, dethy, and JD. |

Looks like the Ravens might save most of the rest of us, at this rate. Assuming Indy ever scores.
Of course, I need Lewis to score a TD for a fantasy football league, so I'm hoping I get wiped out. |

All sorts of closeness, New York Jets score a last minute TD to make the wipeout 7, Packers almost score a last-minute TD, but drop the wipeout score to 3, and the Ravens score with 13 seconds left (due to Colts trying to pass instead of run the clock out on their previous possession) to avoid being the low of 0.
Weirdness. =) |
