Yeah, I was just waiting a bit to start it so people don't sign up and then not play.
But we should probably go ahead and discuss how we're going to set things up this year. Yahoo scoring and everything is fine with me, as usual, but perhaps more important is: how big of a league do we want? Last year we had 14, and that was definitely pushing it in terms of having enough decent players available. I suggested in last year's thread that we shoot for two leagues of 8 (8 being the optimal number for football, IMO, as everyone plays everyone twice, and then 2 rounds of playoffs, without having to play into the last week of the season where you get weird results.). *If* we have enough for that, then we would need to decide how to split the leagues. Some options are:
1. Completely random. Everyone would sign up here, and then I (or someone) would stick the names in excel or random.org or whatever and split them into two groups. Probably the fairest as far as balance and such goes.
2. First come, first served. First 8 to sign up get in the first league, anyone else in the second. Possibly more likely to get the ones who really like doing it in the first league, which is good (though depending on when the signup starts, it could have more to do with timezones or something else).
3. By draft time. Pick two decent draft times, and then everyone signs up for whichever they can make.
4. Some sort of past-participation based division. One option here is to give the top finishers last year the first shot at being in the first league (and then next year, top finishers in each league). That, or just put together everyone who's been doing it for several years.
But whatever is decided, it's probably important that everyone post their interest in playing, so we know how many.

In as usual. (Bleek!)
I agree if we get more than last year we'll need two leagues. |

Football as in Football is correct.
I put my Yankee head on for that, knowing that soccer would have confused myself anyway, plumped for football as in the Yankee Football sense and hoped, as you did anyway, that you guessed the right one.
btw
did you know that Rugby union was also once called football many years ago. Reason why some clubs are still known as 'Rugby Football' clubs.
Probably won't interest you Yanks anyway
I still prefer the word 'Football' over 'Soccer'. |

2004 (14 teams): Championship - Thunder defeats Thunder's brother
3rd place - Eykir defeats Aga
2003 (6 teams): Championship - mith defeats L'lanmal
3rd place - Lepton defeats Eykir?
2002 (10 team league): Championship - "Next big things"? defeats Crackerjack?
That year we had about 5 GLers in a 10 team league, with the remainder of the teams being Crackerjack's friends/coworkers. I think I lost the 3rd place game to another of Crackerjack's bunch.
mith is correct he did not play with us that year, but he frequently posted to explain how badly he would've beaten us if he were playing. |

Alright, it's set up. I'll PM the password out later.
I've set the draft time for Saturday August 6, at 6:30 GMT; that can be changed if it's going to be a bad time. Looks like the weekends are filled up after the 13th-14th. |

The baseball league *is* head-to-head. We're doing rotisserie on mafiascum.
The difference is that in baseball (and basketball) the head-to-head is over several different categories, while it's just points in football, all added together for one game per week. And that's what we always do. |

It means it's the same as it always has been.
Baseball: You accumulate stats in 11 different categories. In each category, either you beat your opponent and get a Win, your opponent beats you to give you a Loss, or you Tie. So, each week there are 11 "Games".
Football: Each player gets points based on the various stats. All the points from your starters are added together. Your total points are compared to your opponent. |

Yeah, we'll stick with yahoo standard unless someone has a compelling reason to be different.
The only thing I'm likely to change at this point other than the draft time is the number of playoff teams; if we have less than 12, I'll set it to the standard 4 teams (weeks 15 and 16). |

10 seems a fine number to me. (Which is how many we have assuming all those that posted sign-up.)
We can't have an odd number, and if 4 or more additional show up, we'd have talk about splitting the league.

Eykir - Indianapolis Doofii

| 10 is actually the standard number for public leagues. It's a pretty good balance between having enough players to go around and the challenge of making it work with a few lesser known guys. I prefer 8 myself, as it works better for scheduling, and if we can get 16 I'm fine with splitting, but 10 is a good number. |

| Right, I've given things a closer look, and neither AP or SS can be considered active GLers at this point. Given that the draft is scheduled for Saturday (still open to change, but no one other than Eykir has said anything either way yet), I am going to close it at 8 for now to prevent ending up with an odd number. If either of you guys turns up, post here and we'll see what we can do to take care of the parity. |

Compared to what we had last year? Yeah. That's 'cause 14 is too many.
Like I said, 10 is pretty standard, so we'll be a little stronger than normal; it'll still be a challenge, though.
How would you expand it? |

I would say have an active roster of:
2QB
2RB
3WR
2TE
2K
2DEF
1FLEX
then maybe 5 guys on the bench. That allows the top 16 QB,K and DEF to be active each week. It's just a suggestion. Otherwise we'll very likely have guys like Pennington, Leftwich, Carr etc either on the bench or not even on a roster. They are pretty good players just not in the top 8 to 10.
You're right that it would be a challenge either way. My personal preference is always to have a large active roster. I like it when you have to find the bit players who are going to break out next week. |

Yeah, but unfortunately when it comes down to bit players, the league is often decided by who has the most time and is on at the right time to pick up key free agents. Those in the states have an advantage as it is.
The Tyler league used to do something like:
2 QB, 3 RB, 5 WR, 2 TE, 2 K, 2 DEF
Which I would prefer to what you suggested because it's closer to the RL ratios.
My vote is still for the standard though.
We're locked into this weekend if we're going to stay on a weekend; there's a few early morning times on the 13th, but they're too early to do us any good I think. |
