I like the part that says "This isn't supposed to happen," as if error messages should happen... Also makes it seem like the GL is talking to us.

That and the fact that the message is die makes it kinda creepy...

Well, that's what's known as a "sanity check". It's little tests you put in the code for things that just should never happen, so if they do happen, you usually put something humorous to alert whoever reads it to the fact that something really strange has happened. I once got a message along the lines of "how the hell did you manage to see this message?" while trying to run a linux kernel I modified myself.
In other words, if it's not a server glitch, it's pretty problematic
