Many people correctly deduced the simple answer to this conundrum was to add water to the lamp. Water and oil are immiscible, meaning that they won't mix. Water is also denser than oil, and will sink to the bottom, leaving the oil floating on top. Adding just enough water will allow all the remaining oil to be burned away.
